Here are a few things that you should remember if you are writing a formal essay. The rules may seem very specific, but they the sort of thing that people expect when they read a formal essay. Formal essays are also sticklers for grammar and punctuation. There may be a fair amount of emotion and creativity in some essays, but this type of essay is not that type of essay.

What to do if you are handwriting your essay

If you are handwriting your formal essay, you should write on lined white regular-sized (A4) paper and use black or blue ink only. If you are handwriting the essay, you should only write on the front page and never on the back of the page.

Your starter formatting rules

You should center your title on the very top line of your first page. You need to capitalize the very first, very last, and most important words in within your titles. These include the second part of any hyphenated words.

The rules that you should memorize about your title

The words which aren’t capitalized within titles are your article adjectives such as “a”,” an”, and “the”. Don’t capitalize any short prepositions or any coordinating conjunctions–unless they are at the beginning or end of your title.

Don’t put a period at the end of a title if it makes a full statement. You are able to use an exclamation point or question mark with appropriate titles. You should not put any quotation marks around your title. Nor should you underline any titles.

Page formatting your essay correctly

You should double-space if you are typing your essay and if you are handwriting it, you should skip every other line. You should indent your first line on each paragraph for at least an inch, or use one pre-set tab. If you are handwriting the essay, you should keep your margin on the left very even, and use a red line on the left-hand side of the paper.

At the very upper right corner of the page you should number your pages, but only starting with page two. Don’t use any Roman numerals. You shouldn’t put a number sign before any numerals and don’t circle any numerals. The title is going to indicate any first pages. Don’t use abbreviations unnecessarily and make sure to spell out your contractions. Just do not forget that your formal essay format cannot show any signs of typical writing laziness.
